Definition

The ability of a material to be colonised by living organisms.

“the aptitude of a material to be colonised by one or several groups of living organisms without necessarily undergoing any biodeterioration”

Guillitte, Olivier. ‘Bioreceptivity: A New Concept for Building Ecology Studies’. Science of The Total Environment 167, no. 1–3 (1995): 215–20. https://doi.org/10/dcnrxp.

Issues

Often considered a negative factor, for example in preservation of stone buildings (cf. biodegradation of cultural heritage, biodeterioration of painted surfaces, etc.)

This is in contrast to "biofouling", a negative interpretation of unintentional bioreceptivity.

Surface properties influence bioreceptivity.

International Biodeterioration & Biodegradation 86 (2014): 334–42. https://doi.org/10/gk5vn3.

There is a debate whether bioreceptivity is a form of biodeterioration or bioprotection.

Conditions

Influences impacting biological colonisation of surfaces:

  • intrinsic properties (such as porosity, roughness, permeability, mineral composition)
  • environmental parameters (such as solar radiation, temperature, water regime, climate, etc.)
  • microclimatic parameters (such as orientation, exposure to shadow, etc.)
