Approaches

Meta-Learning

Support meta learning, ask students what they learned and how.

Measure changes by comparing current to prior knowledge.

For example, compare before and after:

  • Products
  • Styles
  • Names
  • Definitions

Make an initial test or survey to inform tutors and students about what they know.

Repeat a survey at intervals or towards to the end to demonstrate learning.

Types of Learning

Types of knowledge:

  • Declarative
  • Procedural

In many disciplines, there might be a struggle to develop procedural knowledge on how to use concepts in action. In design, the declarative side can be missing. Or, often, the middle is there but the clear understanding of concepts and and fluency in application are hard to achieve.

Make a concrete link between definitions, methods, and practical work.
